Is Berlin Safe at Night?

U-Bahn and the late-night reality

Late-night protocol and the walking-home question

FAQ

Is the Berlin U-Bahn safe for women at night?
Yes — U-Bahn and S-Bahn are extensive, efficient, mostly safe with CCTV and regular BVG-Sicherheit patrols. The U8 (through Kottbusser Tor, Schönleinstraße, Gesundbrunnen) records higher incident density than other lines but most solo women ride it without issue. U-Bahn runs 24/7 Fri/Sat nights — well-used by solo women returning from clubs. Sit near the carriage with the help button. Every platform has an SOS button connecting to BVG control. Pickpocket density is notably lower than Paris or Rome.
Can I walk back to my hotel in Berlin alone at night?
In Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Charlottenburg and central Kreuzberg at midnight — completely fine, with continuous foot traffic, well-lit, well-policed streets. Avoid walking through the Tiergarten after dark (not dangerous but empty), the area around Görlitzer Park late, and the streets immediately around Kottbusser Tor late. Uber, Bolt and FreeNow are widely available (€15-25 typical central late-night fare). The German licensed taxi system is metered, safe, no surge pricing. Berlin Senate runs a women's night-taxi voucher scheme — check berlin.de.
